Toren has been producing his 'Armchair Paintings' since the late 1980s. The artist's use of cheaply bought, street-market paintings - and the resulting significant increase in the painting's selling price - questions the issues of authorship and value in art. The words cut out from the canvas are idiomatic expressions which have almost lost their original, literal meaning through constant use, just as they obscure the original image on the painting. Recent exhibitions include L'Empreinte, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1997), Hand in Glove, Galerie Gabrielle Maubrie, Paris (1997), and Armchair Paintings 1989-1998, Minerva Bar Gallery, Tel Aviv (1998). Amikam Toren lives and works in London. |
